ABOUT THE TOPIC

Recently, we learned that a massive and sophisticated malware hacking campaign attributed to Russian intelligence was launched to attack multiple federal agencies and private companies. The hackers used a variety of legitimate software and cloud hosting services to access the systems of at least nine federal agencies and 100 private companies. The intrusions may be for the purpose of routine espionage, but are possibly more nefarious and highly damaging to U.S. networks. President Biden proposed that $10 billion be allocated in the stimulus package for cyber security, calling these intrusions “an urgent national security issue that cannot wait.” Anne Neuberger, the new Deputy National Security Advisor for Cyber and Emerging Threats, is now leading a federal investigation. What is the scale of these intrusions? How did they happen, and what are we going to do about it?
