Iran is increasing pressure on the Biden Administration to lift sanctions imposed when former President Trump abandoned the multilateral nuclear deal. On February 15th, Iran announced it will block snap inspections by the IAEA in a week if other parties to the agreement do not uphold their obligations to compensate Iran for Washington’s actions. Additionally, based on a confidential IAEA memo, The Wall Street Journal reported that on February 6th Iran started producing uranium metal banned under the agreement. According to the Journal, since May 2018, when the U.S. reversed course, “Tehran . . . increased its production of nuclear fuel, carried out enrichment in locations it isn’t supposed to use, and earlier this year produced 20% enriched uranium, the highest purity of the material it has made since 2013.” Cambridge University’s Roxanne Farmanfarmaian will address U.S. challenges in the nuclear deal along with American concerns about Iran’s missile development, its proxy militias, and regional security.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Roxane Farmanfarmaian teaches international politics in the Department of Politics and International Studies at the University of Cambridge. She also serves as an Academic Director and leads the university’s Global Politics and International Studies division. Farmanfarmaian is a founding member of Cambridge's Centre for the International Relations of the Middle East and North Africa. From 2002 to 2005 she was Editor-in-Chief of the quarterly Cambridge Review of International Affairs. Among her writings, she co-authored Blood and Oil: A Prince's Memoir of Iran, From The Shah To The Ayatollah. Prior to becoming an academic, Farmanfarmaian was a journalist, covering Iran, the Soviet Union, women's business, and media. She tweets @RoxaneFarmanfarma.
