About the Topic
China’s domestic political system and concerns over regime security play a central role in shaping its foreign policy ambitions. The Chinese Community Party (CCP) prioritizes preserving its political authority, maintaining social stability, and sustaining economic growth, all of which influence Beijing’s actions abroad. Territorial disputes in the South China Sea, for example, are viewed through the lens of sovereignty, leading China to adopt firm positions on matters it considers core national interests. As China’s global influence expands, its foreign policy increasingly reflects the dual objectives of enhancing its international standing while safeguarding the political security and long-term survival of the ruling regime. About the Speaker
Jessica Chen Weiss is the David M. Lampton Professor of China Studies and the inaugural faculty director of the Institute for America, China, and the Future of Global Affairs (ACF) at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C. From 2021 to 2022, she served as senior advisor to the policy planning staff at the U.S. Department of State on a Council on Foreign Relations International Affairs Fellowship. She was previously the Michael J. Zak Professor of China and Asia-Pacific Studies at Cornell University and an assistant professor at Yale University.
